On March 5th 2012, the Argentine President Cristina F. de Kirchner announced the renaming of Jubany Station to Dr. Alejandro Carlini by the official Decree 309/ 03.05.2012.

News from the glacier group

After our rather late arrival at Jubany station, we first had to deal with several problems connected to the last overwintering crew like missing or broken equipment. But after a two weeks of reorganization and a lot of help of the present station's crew and commander, we find ourselves in the middle of a very nice and smooth campaign.

Snow, penguins and pizza

Today was full of blizzard and snow drift, very atmospheric but still not a good day to trek to our lake to do fieldwork. Instead Steve and I braved the elements to have a look at the lakes within the Jubany base area.

Arriving at Jubany...

We starteted on October 26th in Hamburg to fly via Franfurt to Buenos Aires. On the 30th we took a bus to Mar del Plata which is a comfortable way to travel since the buses are very much like the first class in an aircraft.

The voyage with Polarstern to Jubany

Once again by ship, we left the continent to our next expedition to Jubany. For Hilke it would be the first trip to the Antarctic and we were both very excited, also because we were now travelling on board of the Polarstern.

Successful start into field work

We are on Jubany Station for one and a half weeks now, Christmas is over and so far we had a lot of successful sampling of water from melt water streams and of Potter Cove.

At Jubany at last

Finally, after what had seemed half an eternity, we left Marambio. The Chilean Twin took us to Frei, the Chilean Antarctic Base. The flight was really nice and short. The view from the plane was spectacular; we could see amazing icebergs, colors and shapes from the air.
