Our trip to Carlini took quite some time. From Buenos Aires via Santiago de Chile and Punta Arenas finally with “Antarctic Airways” to the Chilean station Frei.
This year, the arrival to the Argentine station on King George Island was very smooth. The Chilean Hercules left at 8:20 on September 25. after arriving on the Fieldes Peninsula, King George Island, I just waited about an hour at the landing strip for the weather to clear up so that the helicopter could take of.
We starteted on October 26th in Hamburg to fly via Franfurt to Buenos Aires. On the 30th we took a bus to Mar del Plata which is a comfortable way to travel since the buses are very much like the first class in an aircraft.
Once again by ship, we left the continent to our next expedition to Jubany. For Hilke it would be the first trip to the Antarctic and we were both very excited, also because we were now travelling on board of the Polarstern.
Finally, after what had seemed half an eternity, we left Marambio. The Chilean Twin took us to Frei, the Chilean Antarctic Base. The flight was really nice and short. The view from the plane was spectacular; we could see amazing icebergs, colors and shapes from the air.
After three days of waiting and travelling we arrived at Jubany.
On October 22nd finally our voyage with the Russian ship Polar Pioneer from Mar del Plata to King George Island began. It would be longer than we thought before.
Preparations before expeditions are always exciting. No matter if it’s a private trip to some destinations in the European Alps or it’s scientific expedition to one of the remotest areas of the world - Antarctica.
