[blog in Spanish and English]

Glacier mass balance

For our investigations of glacier mass balance of Fourcade glacier, the big glacier next to Jubany station, our colleagues Ulrike Falk and Matthias Braun have installed a measuring system on the ice cap. To “read” the glacier ice mass loss, we have to go to see these installations using skidoos.

So, 2 days ago, on Saturday, February 5th, we went up the glacier to measure the stakes and also tightened the wires and turnbuckles that hold the automatic weather station and the solar panels down to the snow. The electronic devices and the memory cards were checked by Daniel Viqueira "El Colo" and by Sebastián Galimberti. We call Daniel “El Colo” because his hair is red and so he got the nickname “the Colorado” which means red hair in Argentine.  This was perhaps the last visit of El Colo to the stakes and the automatic weather station because he is close to returning to Buenos Aires. When Daniel is gone, Sebastian will be the new person responsible for the electronics and software maintenance in the incoming overwintering crew in Jubany Station. And he is nice and will also to keep measuring our “estacas”.

We really appreciate the great support provided by Orlando Interlandi (Chief Base) and all of the outgoing overwintering crew (2010) and very especially the work accomplished by "El Colo" on the glacier. Thanks a lot to everybody and have a good return home!

  • Hi, I am "el Colo" and I wish to thank specially to "Manolo" - Sgt Norberto Leonardo Galván, he was always there for all the glacier activity. My contribution to this project was possible because his permanent commitment and assistance.
    Cheers.
